I discuss QCD with a varying number of fundamental fermions, exploring the unusual, strong dynamics in the preconformal, confining phase and the physics of the conformal window and its associated infrared fixed point. The focus is on the role of ab-initio lattice simulations in establishing our current knowledge of the phase diagram at zero and non-zero temperature. Some applications to the analysis of the QCD plasma will be discussed as well.
