The Hosotani Mechanism is a method of dynamical gauge symmetry
breaking which can occur in gauge theories with extra compact
dimensions. Under certain conditions (fermion content and boundary
conditions) the gauge field component in the compact dimension
develops a VEV that is outside the center of the gauge group. I have
been investigating this phenomenon in 3+1 dimensions and report on the
results.
