High-precision QCD at low energy

2015, Aug 02 -- Aug 22

Organizers:
M. Golterman (San Francisco State University)
M. Jamin (IFAE and ICREA)
S. Peris (UAB)

The computation of many important fundamental quantities in non-perturbative QCD has reached such a high precision that new theoretical questions have emerged and old questions have gained a new relevance. Examples range from the issue of convergence of perturbation theory and quark-hadron duality to the inclusion of electromagnetic effects in physical quantities involving hadrons. To go beyond the present precision in the computation of these fundamental quantities (such as for instance quark masses, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, the muon anomalous magnetic moment or weak-matrix elements of operators appearing in models for physics beyond the Standard Model, to just name a few) will require a deeper understanding of these theoretical questions.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together of order fifty senior and junior experts from the continuum and lattice QCD communities in a framework that will leave much time for informal discussions and collaboration. A number of participants may be asked to review the present status in various areas of research relevant for the topic of the workshop, in order to provide structure, while other discussions and topical talks will be scheduled during the workshop itself.

A preliminary list of topics includes:

- The muon g-2,
- Determinations of alpha_s,
- Weak matrix elements of light quarks,
- Kaon physics,
- Electromagnetism on the lattice,
- The operator product expansion, condensates and renormalons,
- Light quark masses,
- V_ud and V_us,
- The proton radius puzzle,
- The nucleon electric dipole moment,
- The Euclidean-Minkowski connection.

In the past, we have found that the atmosphere and logistic support at the CCBPP in Benasque is ideally conducive for a successful program of this type. The workshop is planned to take place over a period of three weeks, from August 2-22, 2015. Priority will be given to participants who can commit to stay for two or three weeks, in order to provide continuity. We expect to be able to provide modest financial support to a limited number of these participants. If you are interested in being considered for financial support, you should apply before March 1, 2015.

Benasque is a beautiful village with a famous ski resort, located in the heart of the Pyrenees, close to the Spanish border with France. We encourage participants to bring their families, and explore the beautiful mountain scenery in which Benasque is located. In addition to the auditorium, the Center offers desk space, ubiquitous blackboards and several meeting areas. To ensure a productive workshop, the idea is to leave plenty of time for discussions among small groups and individual work.

All participants should register at this webpage. Unless you have been contacted by the organizers before, please get in touch with one of them by email prior to registration.
