1st Spanish Soft Matter 1 1/2 Day

2023, Oct 29 -- Oct 31

Organizers:
J. Aragones (UAM)
L. Arriaga (UAM)
A. Fernandez-Nieves (UB - ICREA)
M. Ruiz-Garcia (UCM)

The 1st Spanish Soft Matter 1 ½ Day aims at bringing together soft matter researchers working in this vibrant field within Spain. Systems of interest thus span granular matter, liquid crystals, colloidal science, droplets, jets, emulsions, foams, polymers, and more broadly any many-particle system with internal characteristic length-scales between atomic and macroscopic dimensions, and that could either be at or out-of equilibrium, as in the emerging field of active matter. Mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal aspects of these materials are all of interest, as well as their phase and non-equilibrium behavior, linear and non-linear solid-like and/or liquid-like response, and structural and dynamical properties more generally. Additionally, due to the inherent multidisciplinary nature of the field, connections between soft matter and other disciplines, including statistical mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, complex systems, biology, nanoscience, chemical and mechanical engineering, and physical chemistry are all natural.

The meeting is hosted by the Spanish Division of Condensed Matter Physics (DFMC-GEFES) of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics, and will consist of some invited talks, short talks and what we expect will be a vibrant and enriching poster session. We hope you will attend irrespective of your type of contribution, as one of the goals is to create community and explore synergies and possible collaborations. In fact, we plan on using the meeting as a possible benchmark towards creating a soft matter network funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science. We particularly welcome attendance of graduate students, post-docs and young faculty, and hope the meeting will become the first of a yearly series, to be celebrated in the puente de los santos week, for soft matter researchers in Spain to meet and discuss their latest findings and discoveries.
