Truly successful science should now also lead to innovation that drives commercialization, bringing the impact of scientific discovery to the public and benefiting society. Emulsions, colloids and dispersed phases are an area of physical chemistry where this is of particular importance. These materials have been the subject of extensive investigation and endless scientific fascination in the fields of physical chemistry and soft condensed matter physics. These materials also have myriad uses in applications, including emulsions for cosmetics and encapsulation, colloidal particles for rheology control and biomarkers. In addition, encapsulation of cells or bacteria in emulsion drops provides a means for studying their properties and their evolution. Scientific advances in these topics have also provided the innovations to drive commercial applications. Emulsions and particles provide encapsulation technologies that find uses if cosmetics, materials encapsulation and agriculture. Encapsulation of cells and bacteria in emulsion drops lead to new methods for drug discovery and evolution of new enzymes.

Jerome Bibette has been a leader in the study of emulsions and particles and has been a prolific innovator who has brought numerous scientific advances to the market through successful startup companies. This meeting will explore both the science and the technological and commercial potential of these topics. It will also celebrate Jerome’s 60th birthday.
